Gemma Rice Sisia, a remarkable country girl from Guyra in northern NSW, opened The School of St Jude (named after the patron saint of hopeless causes) in Tanzania, Africa with just three students and one teacher in 2002. You may have seen Gemma on Australian Story in 2005 or more recently in June 2009. If not, you’re sure to be inspired by her story. The school now has over 1150 students and one of the best academic records in the country. These students are selected on merit from among the poorest families in the district and can only hope to attend St Jude’s with a scholarship supported by donors. In 2007, Gemma's achievements were honoured by an Order of Australia. Guided by the school's philosophy of 'Fighting Poverty through Education', Gemma is determined St Jude’s will continue to grow and maintain the high standard of academic achievement it currently enjoys. http://www.schoolofstjude.co.tz Anne Gripper will share her experience of climbing Mt Kilimanjaro and visiting St Jude’s in 2009. Anne had planned to climb Kilimanjaro with her partner Dr June Canavan. Following the untimely death of Dr June in a plane crash as she set out to undertake the Kokoda Trail, Anne and several friends completed the climb in June’s honour. Anne will talk about Dr June’s legacy, including her Klocking Up The K’s project in support of The School of St Jude. Anne was the first President of Females In Training and previously worked in Canberra at the Australian Sports Commission and the then Australian Sports Drug Agency. She is returning to Australia after finishing a stint with the International Cycling Union in Switzerland. We know you’ll love hearing Gemma and Anne share their stories, and look forward to you joining us for a very special evening. |
